
Coach Kates joined the Foss Staff in 1994, became the Assistant Director in 2000, and has been our director since 2025. Rick coached at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, MA and served as a Team USA T&F coach in 1999 and 2003. He is a member of the Massachusetts State Coaches Association Hall of Fame, is a four time Boston Globe Coach of the Year, and a National Federation of High Schools Northeast Coach of the Year. Rick also serves as the MIAA State Meet Director
Coach Dromgoole: A two-time Massachusetts All-State cross country champion and two-time Foot Locker finalist while at Millbury High School, Erin competed at Dartmouth College, where she became an DI All-American and a three-time Ivy League champion in the 3000m. Running post-collegiately for New Balance Boston and the Battle Road Track Club, she represented the United States at the Beijing International Women’s Ekiden. Erin now coaches at Roxbury Latin (MA), where her track & field team has placed 1st or 2nd at the New England Prep School Championships 16 times (and counting!). Erin has returned to Foss Running Camp every summer since she was first a camper in 1993, and she is the unofficial historian of FRC.
Coach Maloney joined the Foss staff in 1981 and served as the owner/director from 1984-2024, and continues today in an advisory role. Kevin Coached Blackstone-Millville Regional High School to a National Record 265 consecutive dual meet victories. He is a two-time National Federation of High Schools XC Northeast Coach of the Year, and two-time finalist for National Coach of the Year. He coached 15 Central Mass championship teams, and is a member of the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Hall of Fame and the BMR Hall of Fame.
A former high school and collegiate runner and Foss camper, Brian is now the managing owner, photographer, and instigator of the Foss Games.
Kyle ran 4 years of track and cross country at Bridgewater State University. While at BSU, Kyle was awarded All-Conference honors for Cross Country during three seasons and All D3 New England during his senior year. Also, he won 4 conference championships in track, once indoors for the 5k, and three in a row for the 10k outdoors. He is top 3 all time for BSU indoors in the 3k and 5k, and for BSU outdoors in the 5k and 10k. Currently a Doctor of Physical Therapy student at the University of Rhode Island. Current World Record Holder for Camp Loop Mile.
Adam is the Assistant Coach for winter and spring track at his alma mater of Woburn High in Massachusetts, specifically covering middle distance and pole vault. In high school he was a MIAA divisional and state qualifier and top 10 finisher in the 600m & 800m and a top 10 all time 5k runner for Woburn High’s XC team. He’s also the camp’s director of chocolate milk and chocolate milk accessories.
Art coaches at Alvirne High School in Hudson, New Hampshire. A standout runner at Pelham High School, Art was the New Hampshire runner-up in cross country before going on to earn NCAA Division II Second Team All-American honors in the 10K at UMass Lowell. He is a member of the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Officials Association Hall of Fame and the Greater Lowell Hall of Fame. As a coach, Art has led eight teams to New Hampshire State Cross Country Championships.
Phil is the head coach at Alvirne High School in Hudson, New Hampshire. A two-time New Hampshire All-State runner in cross country and track, Phil also earned All-New England honors in track before competing collegiately at UMass Lowell from 2016–2020. After college, he returned to Alvirne, helping both the boys' and girls' programs return to the Meet of Champions after an eight-year absence. In 2026, Phil led Alvirne's track program to a runner-up finish at the state championships—the school's first podium finish in the event since 1988. As a child, Phil once told owner/director Kevin Maloney, "One day, I'm going to run this place."
John coaches at Catholic Memorial School, where he has coached four high school All-Americans and a New Balance National Champion. He was named MSTCA Coach of the Year in 2017 after leading Catholic Memorial to the Division 3 Indoor Championship. Before becoming a coach, John was a Massachusetts high school cross country state champion, a two-time New England Two-Mile Champion, and a high school All-American before running collegiately at Boston College. In 2025, John was inducted into the MSTCA Athlete Hall of Fame.
Chas is a professional coach for TrainingPeaks and a World Triathlon Championship qualifier. He has coached Lexington High School's state championship cross country team, founded the Tucson Track Club, and competed on Season 1 of Beast Games. Chas was also a member of the 2025 Foss Games championship team and is a former Camp Loop Mile World Record holder.
Allegedly a lifeguard. Assumption University swim team member and all star, best wigs in camp, runs half-marathons in her spare time. Reluctant Camp Foss DJ.
Former collegiate athlete at Ithaca College. Previously, Brady ran cross country and track & field at North Attleboro high school and was a Foss Camper of the Year. At Foss, Brady’s primary responsibility is camp meteorologist.

The only known "Foss baby." Emma lifeguards if it's not too early, and attended Foss Running Camp in utero in the early 2Ks. She was the Assumption University swim team captain her junior & senior years, and ran outdoor track 7-12 at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, MA, where she was a state qualifier in the 2 mile and 4x800. Disinclined Camp Foss assistant DJ.
Nicole ran at Bridgewater State University for four years. She is a 6x MASCAC champion across the 800, 4x400, and 4x800. After graduating college, Nicole transitioned into marathon running. In her first marathon (Chicago Marathon 2025) Nicole ran a Boston qualifying time. She is currently a severe special education teacher at Salem High School in Salem, Massachusetts. At Foss Nicole is an avid walkie talkie user who enjoys play-by-play commentating.
Legend of the South Shore running community, Derik ran high school at Silver Lake Regional and college at Westfield State University. Derik has run 5 marathons including the Boston and Chicago Marathons. He enjoys running local and USATF road races. Derik is a preschool special education teacher for Brockton Public Schools.
John has had an accomplished running career including running for USAF Europe. He is a retired US Air Force Chief Master Sergeant E9.
Foss Running Camp's first hire, George brings a unique blend of coaching and Foss experience to the staff. In over 40 years of coaching at Notre Dame Academy, Sacred Heart, and Hingham High School, George has coached cross country teams to four Massachusetts All-State cross-country championships. George is a member of the Massachusetts State Coaches Hall of Fame, and member of the Foss Running Camp staff since 1984.
Andrea has a masters degree in Biology & Medicine focused on exercise physiology. She has taught exercise physiology at Brown University and served as an advisor to Brown's XC program.
Katie runs at Furman University after running for Oliver Ames High School. In high school, she was a member of Oliver Ames' 2023 MIAA All-State Championship team and earned an individual berth to Nike Cross Nationals after qualifying through the Northeast Region.
Melissa is the Head Women's Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at Southern Connecticut State University. She brings more than 20 years of collegiate coaching experience from Iowa State University, Manhattan College, and SCSU where she has coached 57 DII All-Americans. She has been named NE10 Conference Coach of the Year and NCAA Division II East Region Coach of the Year. A former collegiate cross country and middle- and long-distance runner at the University of California, Riverside, Melissa brings both high-level competitive and coaching experience to Foss.
Liz ran four years at Bridgewater State University. She now runs half marathons and marathons. She recently ran the Chicago Marathon raising money for Girls on the Run. Liz served as an assistant coach for the Marshfield MA cross country team. She is a guide runner for adult runners with Autism with the Doug Flutie Foundation.
Karma is the Cross-Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Coach at Lunenburg High School, Lunenburg, MA. Karma ran 12 seasons of XC, indoor and outdoor track at the University of New Hampshire. Following graduation from UNH, Karma has continued to run and compete in triathlon events of all distances, including qualifying for and finishing the Boston Marathon 25 times and is also a 3x Ironman finisher. Karma is also a USATF certified official, mother of four adult children, and an Assistant Principal at Lunenburg Middle High School.
Greg has been a cross country coach at E.O. Smith high school for 18 years. In addition to cross country, he has trained athletes in every track event. As a high school science teacher, he incorporates physiology concepts in athlete training programs. Greg has competed in dozens of marathons with some experience in ultra marathon distances.
